Charles Stodghill “Chuck” Sebring has announced he will seek the Democratic Party’s nomination for the District 1 seat on the Knox County Council in the May Primary. “It is NOT time for business as usual,” Sebring said. “We are facing 21st Century challenges and need 21st Century solutions. “The lasting budget effect of HB 1001 is a challenge that will not go away. It is a fact of life now that must be worked with. A good thing which has come from it is that it has trimmed any fat that might have been in our county budget. Unfortunately, it also cut away some of the meat as well. I do not support HB 1001, but unfortunately we don’t have the luxury of going back; we must work with it.” Sebring, 28, 316 Church St., has been a Democratic precinct committeeman since 2000, but says his interest in serving the community has been lifelong. His maternal grandfather and namesake, Charles F. Stodghill, a retired Vincennes city police officer, was Vincennes Township trustee at the time of his death. His father, Edward L. Sebring, was a journalist, covering both city and county government, so local government was standard dining-table talk in the Sebring household. A 1999 graduate of Lincoln High School, Sebring earned the Eagle Scout rank at age 12 and was a delegate to the American Legion’s 1998 Hoosier Boys State. Sebring studied political science at Western Kentucky University, where he was also head football equipment manager. He subsequently transferred to Vincennes University where he earned an associate’s degree in printing technology, was game announcer for Trailblazers Basketball, and was tapped by Phi Theta Kappa academic honorary. He earned a bachelor’s degree in industrial supervision from Indiana State University, being tapped in the process by Golden Key Honor Society, Phi Kappa Phi academic honorary, and Epsilon Pi Tau, technology honorary. A printer by trade, Sebring is employed by IKON Office Solutions and is currently site supervisor at the Duke Energy coal gasification electrical generating plant site in Edwardsport, having formerly been the IKON site supervisor at Good Samaritan Hospital. In the community, Sebring has served as a Scoutmaster, an emergency medical technician, a certified volunteer firefighter, is the number-two officer in Vincennes Masonic Lodge No. 1, and continues to assist LHS athletics as a scoreboard operator, equipment manager and statistician. “We need a fresh pair of eyes,” Sebring said. “When you struggle with a problem long enough, you tend to get tunnel vision and lose sight of the big picture. A new set of eyes, a different viewpoint, can often see the solution that may have been missed before. “I will strive to be creative and to think outside the box. In fact, I will question whether the box even exists. I will leave no stone unturned and question everything. As Lieutenant General Hal Moore said, ‘There is always one more thing you can do to increase the odds of your success.’ “In the printing business, if you don’t remain flexible and aware of everything around you, things can go wrong in a hurry. What works today may not work tomorrow. But the job must be done with the highest quality possible even in a sea of turmoil. I will bring to the Knox County Council that same flexibility, awareness and dedication to service that has made me successful in corporate life.” |
